A short history of the area
In 1782, Rama I moved the capital to the river's eastern bank and founded the Rattanakosin Kingdom. The City Pillar was erected on April 21, 1782, a date regarded as the foundation of Bangkok as Thailand's capital.
The Church here
- 1854President Brigham Young sent Elder Elam Luddington to Thailand, then known as Siam. He served for four months because of a language barrier.
- 1961An English branch began functioning continually in Bangkok after regular worship services were authorized.
- 1966The Thailand District was organized.
- 1966On November 2, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated Thailand for the preaching of the gospel.
- 1968Six missionaries arrived in Thailand, and the first Church services in the Thai language began.
- 1973Thailand became its own mission, later known as the Thailand Bangkok Mission.
- 1974Elder David B. Haight dedicated the first meetinghouse in Thailand.
- 1995The Bangkok Thailand Stake, the first stake in Thailand, was organized.
- 2024The Thailand Bangkok East and Thailand Bangkok West missions were announced as divisions of the former Thailand Bangkok Mission.
