A short history of the area
In 1782, Rama I moved the capital to the eastern bank of the river and established the Rattanakosin Kingdom. The City Pillar was erected on April 21, 1782, a date regarded as the foundation of Bangkok as the capital. In 1972, modern Bangkok was formed through the merger of Phra Nakhon and Thonburi provinces.
The Church here
- 1854President Brigham Young sent missionary Elam Luddington to Thailand, then known as Siam. He stayed for four months because of a language barrier.
- 1961An English branch began functioning continually after regular worship services were authorized.
- 1966The Thailand District was organized.
- November 2, 1966President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated Thailand for the preaching of the gospel.
- 1966Missionaries were transferred to the area, helping ensure membership growth.
- 1973Thailand became its own mission.
- 1974Elder David B. Haight dedicated Thailand's first meetinghouse.
- 1987Three meetinghouses were dedicated in the Bangnaa, Thonburi, and Chiang Mai Branches.
- 1995The Bangkok Stake was created.
