About the mission

The Togo Lome Mission is centered on Lomé, the capital of Togo. Lomé is a coastal city whose limits reach the Ghanaian border, and it is home to the country's first stake.

French is the mission language listed for Togo. Families will also encounter the history and culture of the Ewe people, who founded Lomé.

A short history of the area

Lomé was founded by the Ewes and grew during the 19th century through the work of German, British, and African traders. Its name comes from Alo(ti)mé or Alomé, meaning “in the alo trees” or “within the alo trees” in Ewe. Lomé became the capital of Togoland in 1897.

The city gained a port in 1904 and became Togo's only maritime contact point at the time. Togo became independent in 1960, when Lomé had about 80,000 residents. Today, the city extends toward Aflao in Ghana and serves as the center of a large cross-border urban area.

  1. 1991Michel Avegnon, a Togo native, joined the Church in Ghana.
  2. 1993–1995Michel Avegnon served a full-time mission in Ghana.
  3. Around 1996Agnon Didier Attiogbe, Koffi Afangbedji, and other Latter-day Saints formed a small group in Togo.
  4. 1997African Area President James O. Mason officially organized the Lomé Togo group, with Agnon Ameri Didier as presiding elder.
  5. 1999Togo's first official branch was organized.
  6. 2011Togo was assigned to the newly organized Benin Cotonou Mission.
  7. December 8, 2013The Lomé Togo Stake, Togo's first stake, was organized.
