A short history of the area
Salt Lake City became Utah’s territorial capital in 1856 and the state capital when Utah achieved statehood in 1896. Today, it is known as “Salt Lake” and “SLC,” and it hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The Church here
- 1847The first wagon company of Latter-day Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24. Brigham Young called it the “right place.”
- 1859More than 60,000 Latter-day Saints had traveled to Utah, and Church members had established more than 350 communities in Utah and nearby states.
- 1877The St. George Temple was dedicated.
- 1884The Logan Temple was dedicated.
- 1888The Manti Temple was dedicated.
- 1893The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated on April 6 after 40 years of construction.
- 1975The Utah Salt Lake City Mission, the first mission in the state, was organized.
- 2002Utah hosted the Winter Olympic Games.
- 2012The Utah Salt Lake City West Mission launched as a pilot mission alongside the Central mission.
