About the mission

The Vietnam Hanoi Mission serves Vietnam, with Hanoi as its main city. Church congregations in Vietnam include the Hanoi Branch and two branches in Ho Chi Minh City, organized into the Hanoi District.

Vietnamese is the mission language. Missionaries called branch builders strengthen members and help build branches at registered locations.

A short history of the area

People have lived in the Hanoi region for at least 4,000 years. Around the 3rd century BC, a fortified citadel called Cổ Loa was built in the area. In 1010, Emperor Lý Thái Tổ moved the capital of Đại Việt to the site of the Đại La Citadel and named it Thăng Long, meaning “ascending dragon.”

The city was renamed Đông Kinh in 1428 and Hà Nội in 1831. Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1945 and became the capital of unified Vietnam in 1976. Today, it is Vietnam’s second-most populous centrally governed city.

1995Church leaders organized branches in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
1996The Hanoi Branch had 19 members.
1997The Church reported 100 members and two branches in Vietnam.
2014The Vietnamese government officially recognized the Interim Representative Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vietnam and gave it nationally recognized legal standing.
2016The Vietnam Hanoi Mission was created from the Cambodia Phnom Penh Mission.
2016On May 31, the Vietnamese government granted official full recognition to the Church and its representative committee in an historic ceremony in Hanoi.
