A short history of the area

The mission home and mailing address are in Burke, Virginia. Burke is part of the Washington, D.C., area served by the mission.

The Church here

1820Joseph Smith received a vision and further instructions from God to restore God’s Church on earth.
1830The Church was organized on April 6 in Fayette, New York, with 50 people and six official members present.
1831–1838Kirtland, Ohio, served as the organizational headquarters of the Church.
1844Joseph Smith was assassinated, and Church leaders determined that the Latter-day Saints would need to leave Nauvoo, Illinois.
1846The Saints established a refuge at Winter Quarters near present-day Omaha, Nebraska.
1847The first company of Latter-day Saint pioneers reached the Salt Lake Valley on July 24.
1986On July 1, the Washington D.C. Mission was reorganized into the Washington D.C. North and Washington D.C. South missions.
