A short history of the area
American settlement grew after J.J. Downing and S.R. Scranton built a small sawmill at Spokane Falls in 1871. James N. Glover and Jasper Matheney bought the claims in 1873. Spokane was incorporated in 1881, rebuilt after the Great Spokane Fire of 1889, and hosted Expo ’74, an environmentally themed World’s Fair.

- 1854Four missionaries serving in California were sent to labor in the Washington and Oregon territories, and enough converts joined to form a congregation along the Lewis River.
- 1906A Sunday School was organized in Spokane on September 9.
- 1916A branch was organized in Spokane on March 12.
- 1930Washington had 1,900 Church members in eight congregations, including chapels in Spokane, Everett, Seattle, and Olympia.
- 1978The Washington Spokane Mission was created on July 1.
- 1980A temple was completed in Seattle.
- 1999The Spokane Washington Temple was completed and dedicated.
- 2001The Columbia River Washington Temple was completed and dedicated.
