A short history of the area
On April 18, 1980, Zimbabwe became an independent nation. Two years later, on April 18, 1982, Salisbury was renamed Harare. Today, the city sits on a high plateau and is known for its mild climate and green spaces.
The Church here
- 1927Two sons of a Church member who had emigrated from South Africa became the first members baptized in Southern Rhodesia.
- 1950Eight missionaries were sent to Salisbury, now Harare, and Bulawayo.
- 1951Hugh Hodgkiss, the first convert, was baptized on February 1.
- 1987The Zimbabwe Harare Mission was organized from the South Africa Johannesburg Mission.
- 1988Selections from the Book of Mormon were translated into Shona.
- 1991Elder James E. Faust dedicated Zimbabwe for the preaching of the gospel on October 25.
- 1998President Gordon B. Hinckley visited Zimbabwe and spoke to about 1,500 Latter-day Saints.
- 1999The Harare Zimbabwe Stake, Zimbabwe's first stake, was organized on December 12.
