Oaks Strong: Strength That Runs Deep

There is something fitting about the name Oaks. An oak tree does not become strong overnight. It grows slowly, develops deep roots, withstands storms, and continues reaching upward year after year. In many ways, that image captures the life and leadership of President Dallin H. Oaks.

Born in Provo, Utah, in 1932, President Oaks experienced challenges early in life. After his father died when Dallin was only seven, his family faced difficult circumstances. Yet those experiences became part of a life characterized by perseverance, learning, faith, and service. His story reminds us that strength is not the absence of hardship. Strength is what develops when we continue moving forward through it.

President Oaks built an extraordinary professional life before being called as an Apostle. He graduated from Brigham Young University and the University of Chicago Law School, clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, taught law at the University of Chicago, served as president of BYU from 1971 to 1980, and later served as a justice of the Utah Supreme Court. In 1984, he left that distinguished legal career to accept a call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

That history gives new meaning to the playful phrase “Oaks & Muscle.”

The muscle isn't really about enormous biceps underneath a suit—although, judging from this shirt, President Oaks may have a few surprises hidden beneath that pinstripe jacket.

The deeper strength is character.

It is the strength to stand for truth. The strength to defend religious freedom. The strength to teach eternal principles. The strength to serve faithfully for decades. The strength to keep working when the assignment is difficult. And perhaps most importantly, the strength to remain committed to Jesus Christ.

The Church describes President Oaks as a firm defender of truth, a compassionate teacher, and an advocate for religious freedom. His teachings consistently point people toward Jesus Christ, faith, families, covenants, and the hope found through the Savior.

In October 2025, President Oaks was set apart as the 18th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, after more than four decades of service as an Apostle.

So when we say OAKS & MUSCLE, we're having a little fun—but we're also celebrating something real.

We're celebrating a man whose life demonstrates that genuine strength is built over time. It comes from faith, discipline, courage, experience, service, and an unwavering determination to do what is right.
