He eventually became a commercial airline pilot with Lufthansa, flying aircraft including the Boeing 737, Airbus, DC-10, and Boeing 747. He rose to become Lufthansa's chief pilot and senior vice president of flight operations.

But Elder Uchtdorf's career wasn't the end of his journey—it became part of the way he taught the gospel. Called as a General Authority in 1994 and sustained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 2004, he later served in the First Presidency from 2008 to 2018.
