Seer: Why We Chose Joseph Smith

What does it mean to be a seer?

In the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, a seer is more than someone who predicts the future. A seer is a prophet and revelator who receives knowledge from God and helps others see what they could not see for themselves. That is why “Seer” became the perfect name for this design—and why we chose Joseph Smith as the man behind it.

Joseph Smith stands at the center of one of the most remarkable religious stories of the modern era. As a young man in upstate New York, Joseph testified that God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. From that beginning came a remarkable work of Restoration, including the Book of Mormon, priesthood authority, modern revelation, temples, and the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

But Joseph Smith never claimed that he was the source of the Restoration. His message consistently pointed people toward Jesus Christ.

The title Seer is particularly appropriate because scripture specifically describes Joseph's calling in those terms. In Doctrine and Covenants 21:1, the Lord identifies Joseph Smith as “a seer, a translator, a prophet, an apostle of Jesus Christ.” The Book of Mormon also explains that a seer is a revelator and prophet who can know things that are past, present, and future.

Even more remarkably, 2 Nephi 3 contains an ancient prophecy about a latter-day “choice seer” named Joseph. Latter-day Saints understand this prophecy to refer to Joseph Smith and his role in bringing forth the Book of Mormon and helping restore the knowledge and covenants of God.

That is what makes this design meaningful.

We chose Joseph Smith not because he was perfect, or because Latter-day Saints worship him. We chose him because of the work he was called to do. He was a man who claimed to have seen Jesus Christ, received revelation, translated an ancient record by the gift and power of God, and helped establish the foundation of the latter-day Restoration.

The pixelated meme glasses add a little modern humor to a historical figure, but the word beneath his face carries the real message: SEER.

It reminds us that Joseph's significance isn't simply that he lived in the nineteenth century. His significance is that he testified that God still speaks, Jesus Christ still reveals His gospel, prophets can still receive revelation, and ancient covenants can be restored.

Joseph Smith's story is ultimately a story about Jesus Christ and the Restoration of His gospel.

That's why we chose this amazing man.

That's why we call him Seer.

Seer. Prophet. Translator. Restorer. Witness of Jesus Christ.

And that's why this design belongs on a shirt.
