A short history of the area
Pedro de Valdivia arrived in the Mapocho Valley on December 13, 1540, and founded Santiago del Nuevo Extremo on February 12, 1541. Pedro de Gamboa designed the city around the Plaza Mayor, now called the Plaza de Armas. Santiago later played an important role in Chile’s independence, including the proclamation of the First Government Junta in 1810 and the Battle of Maipú in 1818.
The Church here
- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, secured permission for missionaries to enter the country, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived, and the Santiago Branch was organized.
- 1959The Andes Mission was created, covering Chile and Peru.
- 1961The Chile Mission was organized with headquarters in Santiago.
- 1975The Chile Mission divided to create the Chile Concepcion Mission.
- 2003The Chile Concepcion South Mission was created from the reorganization of the Concepcion, Osorno, and Santiago South missions.
- 2004The Santiago Chile South Mission was renamed the Chile Rancagua Mission.
- 2013A Santiago South Mission was organized as one of the additional missions in the Santiago area.
