A short history of the area
Britain began controlling Hong Kong Island in 1841, and the Qing dynasty ceded it to the United Kingdom in 1842. Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. Hong Kong returned to China on July 1, 1997, after 156 years of British rule.
The Church here
- 1853Hosea Stout, James Lewis, and Chapman Duncan arrived in Hong Kong as missionaries on April 28. They left on June 22 after several weeks.
- 1949President McKay called Hilton A. Robertson to open the Chinese Mission, with Hong Kong chosen as its headquarters.
- 1950Missionaries H. Grant Heaton and William Pa’alani arrived in Hong Kong on February 25. On December 31, Koot Siu Yuen, Koot Siu Foon, and Koot Siu Hung accepted baptism as the first members of the Church in Hong Kong.
- 1955The Southern Far East Mission was organized with headquarters in Hong Kong.
- 1965The Church organized its first member district in Hong Kong, and the Chinese translation of the Book of Mormon was first printed.
- 1969The mission was named the Hong Kong-Taiwan Mission.
- 1971The mission divided, leaving the Hong Kong Mission to administer Hong Kong and Macau.
- 1987Church membership in Hong Kong reached 14,000.
