Large in Stature: The Strength to Go and Do

Nephi was “large in stature,” but his greatest strength was never measured by the size of his muscles. His strength came from faith, obedience, courage, and an unwavering determination to follow the Lord. This graphic brings that idea to life by portraying Nephi doing what modern strength athletes would recognize as one of the ultimate tests of power: a heavy deadlift.

The image of Nephi lifting an enormous barbell is symbolic. A deadlift requires more than muscle. It requires discipline, preparation, focus, and the willingness to strain against something that seems almost impossible to move. Those same qualities defined Nephi throughout his life.

When Lehi received the commandment to leave Jerusalem, Nephi did not know where the journey would lead. He faced uncertainty, hardship, family conflict, hunger, exhaustion, and danger. Yet Nephi chose to trust God. In 1 Nephi 2:16, he explains that he “did cry unto the Lord” and that the Lord softened his heart so that he believed the words spoken by his father. Nephi’s faith did not remove the difficulty. Instead, it gave him the strength to face it.

That is the message behind LARGE IN STATURE.

Being large in stature is more than being physically strong. It is becoming large in character. It is developing the spiritual strength to stand when life gets heavy. It is choosing faith when the path ahead is uncertain. It is having the courage to do difficult things because you know the Lord has asked you to do them.

The massive weights surrounding Nephi represent the burdens and challenges we all encounter. The words STRENGTH, COURAGE, FAITH, and OBEDIENCE remind us where real power comes from. Physical strength can move a barbell, but spiritual strength can move a life.

Nephi eventually faced challenges far greater than anything represented by a weight in a gym. He was commanded to build a ship despite having no previous experience. He endured opposition from his brothers. He traveled through the wilderness, suffered hunger and affliction, and repeatedly placed his trust in the Lord. Through it all, he learned that God could accomplish mighty things through those who were willing to trust Him.

For Latter-day Saints, Nephi’s example is a reminder that discipleship requires action. Faith is not merely believing that God can help us; it is trusting Him enough to take the next step.
