Christ and the Children, oil on copper by Carl Bloch, 1865–1879

Jesus sits low, at a child’s height, against a sunlit wall. One child presses close against His side. Another stands at His knee, half-wrapped in a cloth, unsure. Mothers wait at the left.

At the right, a disciple steps forward and gestures, perhaps to keep the families back, as Mark says the disciples tried to do. Jesus does not look at him. He looks up toward the mothers, and draws the children in.
