A young man in rich robes and a turban has come to ask what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus answers with His hand turned toward the poor, who wait in the shadows at the left. The young man looks down, and Mark says he “went away grieved: for he had great possessions.”

Hofmann’s wife loved this painting, and Deseret News reports that after her death he kept it in his studio rather than sell it. Today it hangs in The Riverside Church in New York.
