Mary Magdalene has just recognized Him. She kneels in a flaming red-orange dress, reaching out, and the risen Christ raises His hand: “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father.”

Ivanov set the scene in the gardens of the Villa d’Este near Rome. The painting won him the title of Academician in 1836.
