Is it true you wear special underwear?

The hallway answer

About 15 seconds

“Adults who make promises in the temple wear simple garments under their clothes, as a reminder of those promises to God. There’s nothing magic about them. It’s a bit like a wedding ring, but private.”

Then ask them: Does your family have anything you wear or keep to remember something important?

The real answer

About 5 minutes

The Church’s Topics and Questions page explains that adult members who receive the temple endowment make covenants and receive “a simple undergarment—often referred to as the ‘temple garment.’” It is worn under normal clothing “as a daily physical reminder of their covenant relationship with God.”

For the Strength of Youth calls it “a symbol of Jesus Christ and a reminder of your temple covenants.” The idea has a Bible background: God told Moses to make “holy garments” for the priests serving in the tabernacle (Exodus 28).

Teens don’t wear them. People can receive the endowment at 18 or older, once they’re out of high school. Members consider garments sacred, so they don’t joke about them or show them off. Calling them “magic underwear” misunderstands them, but you can answer that kindly.
