Does your church hate gay people?

1

The hallway answer

About 15 seconds

“No. My church teaches that everyone is a child of God and deserves kindness, and I care about my LGBTQ friends. We do believe marriage is between a man and a woman. But loving people isn’t up for debate.”

Then ask them: Has someone from a church treated you or a friend badly? I’d really want to know.

The real answer

About 5 minutes

The Church’s Topics and Questions page on same-sex attraction says that “identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual or experiencing same-sex attraction is not a sin” and does not prevent someone from participating in the Church, holding callings or attending the temple. It ends, “we are all children of God, deserving of each other’s kindness and compassion.”

The Church also teaches that sexual relations belong only in marriage between a man and a woman, and that standard applies to everyone, gay or straight. For the Strength of Youth speaks directly to youth who feel same-sex attraction: “You are a beloved child of God and a disciple of Jesus Christ.”

You can hold your beliefs and still be the friend who never jokes about it, who sticks up for people being bullied, and who listens. For the Strength of Youth asks youth to reach out “especially to those who are sometimes victims of hurtful words and actions.”

What’s behind the question

Many teens have LGBTQ friends or are working through their own feelings. This question often comes from real hurt, or from seeing Christians be unkind. Lead with love, and listen more than you talk.

Source labels: Official = published by the Church. Scripture = the standard works. Faithful scholarship = independent Latter-day Saint researchers. Helpful, but not official.

For me

Think it through
  1. Do my friends know they’re safe with me?
  2. How can I hold to what I believe and still show Christlike love?
  3. Is there someone being left out or mocked I could stand up for?
Act in faithWhat do I already know and believe here?
Eternal perspectiveHow does God’s plan change how I see this?
