Are you going on a mission? Why would you do that?
The hallway answer
About 15 seconds“I’m hoping to. Missionaries volunteer, and even pay their own way, to share what they believe about Jesus and to serve. It’s a big sacrifice, but people come home saying it was the best thing they ever did.”
The real answer
About 5 minutesAfter His Resurrection, Jesus told His disciples to “go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Latter-day Saints take that seriously. The Topics and Questions page on missionary work says young men have a duty to prepare to serve full-time missions, and young women and older couples also have the opportunity.
Both young men and young women can begin at 18. Young men usually serve for two years and young women for 18 months. Missionaries don’t choose where they go. They teach, serve in communities and study a lot. Families and the missionaries themselves pay for it.
For the Strength of Youth frames it as part of being a disciple: “you can help with God’s work.” Not every young member serves a full-time mission, and the Church provides options for those with health or other limits.

Research roomWhat’s behind the question
Most friends have seen missionaries in white shirts on bikes. They may wonder why anyone would give up two years, or feel a little uneasy about the idea of “converting” people.
Source labels: Official = published by the Church. Scripture = the standard works. Faithful scholarship = independent Latter-day Saint researchers. Helpful, but not official.
For me
Think it through- What do I already know that I’d want to share with someone?
- How can I be a missionary now, without a name tag?
- What would I need to start preparing today?
