Doctrine and Covenants 119 The Beginning of the Tithing
Church members had earlier tried to live a law of consecration and stewardship in Missouri, but they were driven from Jackson County in 1833. Church finances also suffered after business ventures failed and a nationwide financial crisis began in 1837; Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon had incurred debts. Church leaders had already asked members to contribute to help meet debts and support the Saints in Missouri. On July 8, 1838, Joseph Smith dictated this revelation, which set out a plan for contributions and established an ongoing law of tithing.

Doctrine and Covenants 119
- Verily, thus saith the Lord, I require all their surplus property to be put into the hands of the bishop of my church in Zion,
- For the building of mine house, and for the laying of the foundation of Zion and for the priesthood, and for the debts of the Presidency of my Church.
- And this shall be the beginning of the tithing of my people. (4 connected talks)
- And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord. (7 connected talks)
- Verily I say unto you, it shall come to pass that all those who gather unto the land of Zion shall be tithed of their surplus properties, and shall observe this law, or they shall not be found worthy to abide among you.
- And I say unto you, if my people observe not this law, to keep it holy, and by this law sanctify the land of Zion unto me, that my statutes and my judgments may be kept thereon, that it may be most holy, behold, verily I say unto you, it shall not be a land of Zion unto you.
- And this shall be an ensample unto all the stakes of Zion. Even so. Amen.

How these connections are counted
Sources. Scripture text is the public-domain English text of the Doctrine and Covenants (sections 1–138). Section summaries, headings and questions are Weak Things’ own; the Church’s copyrighted headings and footnotes are not used. Joseph Smith Papers links point to the exact manuscript and printed pages. Connections come from the scripture links in every general conference talk from April 2000 through October 2026.
Distinct talks, not mentions. Each talk counts once per verse. Badges show whether the talk cites this exact verse or a passage that includes it, and whether the link is in a footnote or the talk text. Frequency is not a measure of doctrinal importance.
Your own words, their link. Summaries are Weak Things’ own. Talk text, Joseph Smith Papers images and transcriptions are not reproduced; every card links to the original. This independent study tool does not speak for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
