Doctrine and Covenants 138 The vision of the redemption of the dead
On October 3, 1918, President Joseph F. Smith, seventy-nine and very ill, sat in his room pondering the scriptures. World War I was ending, influenza was spreading worldwide, and earlier that year his son Hyrum Mack Smith, an apostle, had died. While he read Peter’s words about Christ preaching to the spirits in prison, he saw the spirit world: the Savior visiting the righteous dead and organizing them to carry the gospel to all who had died without it.
