Doctrine and Covenants 17 You shall testify of them
A Book of Mormon passage and an earlier revelation had promised that three people would witness the gold plates, and Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris sought the opportunity. Joseph Smith dictated this revelation in Fayette, New York, in June 1829; its wording suggests the translation was finished. The Lord promised the three witnesses that faith would bring them a view of the plates and other sacred objects, and charged them to testify. Joseph later recalled that, not many days afterward, he and the three men went into the woods to pray for the promised view.

- Behold, I say unto you, that you must rely upon my word, which if you do with full purpose of heart, you shall have a view of the plates, and also of the breastplate, the sword of Laban, the Urim and Thummim, which were given to the brother of Jared upon the mount, when he talked with the Lord face to face, and the miraculous directors which were given to Lehi while in the wilderness, on the borders of the Red Sea. How these connections are counted
Sources. Scripture text is the public-domain English text of the Doctrine and Covenants (sections 1–138). Section summaries, headings and questions are Weak Things’ own; the Church’s copyrighted headings and footnotes are not used. Joseph Smith Papers links point to the exact manuscript and printed pages. Connections come from the scripture links in every general conference talk from April 2000 through October 2026.
Distinct talks, not mentions. Each talk counts once per verse. Badges show whether the talk cites this exact verse or a passage that includes it, and whether the link is in a footnote or the talk text. Frequency is not a measure of doctrinal importance.
