Doctrine and Covenants 47 Keep a regular history
By March 1831, Oliver Cowdery was away on a mission, and John Whitmer had taken on some of the writing and record-keeping work Cowdery had done. This revelation confirmed that John should help Joseph Smith copy revealed material and keep a continuing history of the Church. It also allowed John to speak in meetings when it was appropriate. The Lord promised help through the Comforter as John remained faithful.

How these connections are counted
Sources. Scripture text is the public-domain English text of the Doctrine and Covenants (sections 1–138). Section summaries, headings and questions are Weak Things’ own; the Church’s copyrighted headings and footnotes are not used. Joseph Smith Papers links point to the exact manuscript and printed pages. Connections come from the scripture links in every general conference talk from April 2000 through October 2026.
Distinct talks, not mentions. Each talk counts once per verse. Badges show whether the talk cites this exact verse or a passage that includes it, and whether the link is in a footnote or the talk text. Frequency is not a measure of doctrinal importance.
Your own words, their link. Summaries are Weak Things’ own. Talk text, Joseph Smith Papers images and transcriptions are not reproduced; every card links to the original. This independent study tool does not speak for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
