Masters/Carl Bloch/Adoration of the Shepherds

Adoration of the Shepherds, line etching by Carl Bloch, 1881

Scroll or pinch to zoom · drag to look around

Bloch made this etching in 1881, the year after he returned to printmaking. Every tone here is built from scratched lines: dense cross-hatching for the dark stable, open paper for the light.

A lantern hangs at the center. Mary sits at the left with the child on her lap, and the shepherds crowd in from the right, one lifting his arm. Through a gap in the roof at the upper right, a star shines.
