Christus Consolator, oil by Carl Bloch, 1875

This painting belongs to no single Gospel event, so it hangs at the end of the wing. Christ stands with both arms open, and around Him crowd the people who need Him: an old man with a staff, a mother looking up, a man bare to the waist, and a man clinging to His robe with his eyes shut.

The title means “Christ the Comforter.” Behind His head the sky opens into light. He is not teaching or healing here; He is simply receiving everyone who comes.
