Christ Before Pilate, oil on canvas by Mihály Munkácsy, 1881

Scroll or pinch to zoom · drag to look around

Jesus stands in white in the middle of Pilate’s hall, perfectly still, while the room erupts around Him. A man at the left throws up his arms and shouts; a soldier holds the crowd back with his spear; the high priest argues his case. Pilate sits on his raised seat at the right, his hand at his chin.

Munkácsy makes Jesus the only calm figure in the painting. Everyone else is reacting to Him.
