Christ Crowned with Thorns, etching by Carl Bloch, 1882

There is no crowd here, no Pilate, no soldiers. Bloch brings us face to face with Jesus after the soldiers have crowned Him. He turns His head over His shoulder and looks straight at us.

The crown of thorns is drawn sharply; the rest dissolves into soft lines. A reed, given to Him as a mock scepter, rises at the right. This is Pilate’s “Behold the man,” spoken now to whoever stands in front of the print.
