Christ on the Cross, oil on copper by Carl Bloch, 1865–1879

Bloch paints the cross against a sky going dark, with a band of light still at the horizon. At its foot, the people who loved Jesus have collapsed. Mary has fainted into the arms of the women; a man in a red turban bends over her.

At the top of the cross hangs the board Pilate ordered, written in three languages. At the left edge, ladders lean against the sky, waiting.
