Christ on the Cross, etching and drypoint by Carl Bloch, 1884

Scroll or pinch to zoom · drag to look around

In 1884 Bloch returned to the cross as a printmaker. The plate is spare: the cross nearly fills the height, and the sky is built from long horizontal strokes.

At the left a disciple sits with his hand at his mouth. At the right, women bend over Mary on the ground. Far off at the right edge, tiny figures carry a ladder.
