Two men lower the body of Jesus onto a white linen sheet at the mouth of the tomb. Commons identifies them as Nicodemus at the left and Joseph of Arimathea at the right. John says Nicodemus brought a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloes.

The mourners stand close at the left: Mary, John, and the women, heads bowed. The open door of the tomb waits in the rock behind them. In the grass in front, Bloch has painted white lilies.
