The Resurrection, altarpiece by Carl Bloch, 1877

This is Bloch’s largest painting, the altarpiece of Sankt Jakobs Kirke in Copenhagen. BYU’s Museum of Art asked to borrow it ten times over seven years. The church finally lent it for Sacred Gifts in 2013.

Christ rises from the tomb with both arms raised, and two angels kneel in prayer on either side. BYU’s curators point to the details: lilies bursting from the tomb for purity and new life; and the fire, spear and helmet the guards left behind when they fled.
