Masters/Carl Bloch/Peter Repentant

Peter Repentant, etching by Carl Bloch, 1882

What happens after the rooster crows? Bloch’s painting stops before it. This etching, made in 1882, goes on to the next verse. Peter sits hunched on a stone bench, his head in his hand, his body folded into his cloak.

A rooster still stands at the left, and another below. Bloch left the background loose and sketchy so nothing competes with Peter’s grief.
