Jesus Tempted, oil on copper by Carl Bloch, 1865–1879

Jesus stands high on a rocky height, one arm out, turning away. Below Him, wrapped in red and pressed against the rocks, the tempter cowers, his face hidden in his arm.

Bloch paints the end of the story, not the struggle. Matthew says that after the third answer, “the devil leaveth him.” The light is behind Jesus, the mist rises around the rocks, and the one who tempted Him can no longer look up.
