Bloch moves the miracle to the edge of the party. The wedding guests feast in the distance under the arches. In the foreground are the people John’s Gospel singles out: the servants who filled the jars, and the ruler of the feast tasting what they bring.

A seated man holds out a glass of the new wine. A servant shoulders a heavy jar, and another kneels beside a second one. Bloch keeps the miracle with these working people: John says the ruler of the feast “knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew).”
