In 1836 there was one temple, in Kirtland, Ohio. Today there are 385 temples dedicated, scheduled, under construction or announced, in 80 countries and territories. Temples by the Numbers puts all of them on one map. Press play to watch 190 years unfold, then tap any temple to go deeper.
| What we counted | Number |
|---|---|
| Temples, from dedicated to just announced | 385 |
| Dedicated | 222 |
| Dedications scheduled | 13 |
| Under construction | 53 |
| Announced | 97 |
| Countries and territories | 80 |

Counting from St. George in 1877, the Jordan River Utah Temple became temple No. 20 in 1981. Boston was No. 100 in 2000, the year 34 temples were dedicated, the most in a single year. With 21 dedications on the calendar, 2026 is the second busiest year ever.

President Russell M. Nelson announced 200 of the 385 temples between 2018 and 2025, most of them from the general conference pulpit. That has changed: since October 2025, new temples are no longer announced in general conference. Under President Dallin H. Oaks, leaders assigned by the First Presidency announce them at local gatherings, starting with Portland, Maine.
A temple announced today is about five and a half years from dedication. In the 2000s, when smaller temples were built quickly, the typical wait was just over two years. The fastest was Monticello, Utah, at 295 days. The Salt Lake Temple took 45 years.
Two out of three temples now on the way are outside the United States. Of the 163 temples scheduled, under construction or announced, 111 are outside the U.S. Africa has 9 dedicated temples and 20 more coming.
The last section shows all 385 temples as squares, in the order they were announced. Tap one to open its page, with key dates, nearby temples and missions, and a countdown or a dedication-date guess for temples still being built. From there you can mark the temples you've visited in your Temple Passport or name temples from the air in Temple Flyover.
“Dedicated” means a temple dedicated at least once that is in operation, closed for renovation or waiting to be rededicated. Kirtland and the first Nauvoo Temple are on the map but are not numbered and are not in the 385. Wait times run from the public announcement to the first dedication. The Church's own summary may differ by a few because it counts temples under renovation separately. Every source is listed at the bottom of the page.
The temple records are checked weekly against official Church sources. When sources disagree on a date, we use the Church News date.
No. By the Numbers is an independent Weak Things project. The figures come from official Church reports and other published sources, listed on the page.
