Doctrine and Covenants 22 Enter in at the gate

The revelation came shortly after the Church was formally organized on April 6, 1830. Some people wanted to join without being baptized again, and the revelation addresses whether a baptism in another church was enough for entry into the new Church. Earlier church instructions described baptism but had not directly answered that question. Orson Pratt later recalled that some people from Baptist churches had raised the issue.

Doctrine and Covenants 22

  1. Behold, I say unto you that all old covenants have I caused to be done away in this thing; and this is a new and an everlasting covenant, even that which was from the beginning.
  2. Wherefore, although a man should be baptized an hundred times it availeth him nothing, for you cannot enter in at the strait gate by the law of Moses, neither by your dead works.
  3. For it is because of your dead works that I have caused this last covenant and this church to be built up unto me, even as in days of old.
  4. Wherefore, enter ye in at the gate, as I have commanded, and seek not to counsel your God. Amen.

How these connections are counted

Sources. Scripture text is the public-domain English text of the Doctrine and Covenants (sections 1–138). Section summaries, headings and questions are Weak Things’ own; the Church’s copyrighted headings and footnotes are not used. Joseph Smith Papers links point to the exact manuscript and printed pages. Connections come from the scripture links in every general conference talk from April 2000 through October 2026.

Distinct talks, not mentions. Each talk counts once per verse. Badges show whether the talk cites this exact verse or a passage that includes it, and whether the link is in a footnote or the talk text. Frequency is not a measure of doctrinal importance.

Your own words, their link. Summaries are Weak Things’ own. Talk text, Joseph Smith Papers images and transcriptions are not reproduced; every card links to the original. This independent study tool does not speak for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
