This is the painting many families know best. Jesus sits on a rock, one hand raised toward heaven, and the crowd gathers on the hillside below: old men and young people, a girl at the edge of the crowd, a man with his hands clasped at his mouth.

Bloch fills the foreground with people who have walked a long way. A gourd for water and a walking staff lie on the ground. The young man in front, with a red cloth around his head, has stopped everything to listen.
