Masters/Carl Bloch/The Doubting Thomas

The Doubting Thomas, oil on canvas by Carl Bloch, 1881

Scroll or pinch to zoom · drag to look around

Bloch painted this altarpiece in 1881 for the village church of Ugerløse. Christ stands in white, drawing back His robe to show the wound in His side.

Thomas does not reach out to touch it. He has fallen to his knees, and covers his eyes with his hand. Bloch paints the moment he no longer needs proof: “My Lord and my God.”
