A short history of the area
Gilbert was known as the “Hay Capital of the World” from 1911 through the late 1920s. It was incorporated on July 6, 1920, and is now a large suburb of Phoenix. The town remains connected to its past through the Gilbert Historical Museum, housed in the former Gilbert Elementary School.

- 1877Daniel Webster Jones and Henry Clay Rogers established Fort Utah in the Salt River Valley.
- 1891Gilbert was founded by William “Bobby” Gilbert.
- 1912Latter-day Saints who had fled Mormon colonies in Mexico settled in Gilbert.
- 1918The Mormon settlers in Gilbert were organized into the Gilbert Ward.
- 1920Gilbert was incorporated as a farming community supported by the railway, Roosevelt Dam, and local canals.
- 1927The Mesa Arizona Temple, the first temple in Arizona, was dedicated on October 23.
- 1969The Arizona Mission was organized from the California South Mission.
- 1974The Arizona Mission was renamed the Arizona Tempe Mission on June 20.
