About the mission

The Fiji Suva Mission serves Fiji, an island country in the South Pacific. Suva is the mission’s main city and Fiji’s main political, economic, and cultural center.

Fijian and Hindi are spoken in the mission. English is also widely used in Fiji’s diverse communities.

A short history of the area

Suva began as a small village. In 1868, the Bauan chieftain Seru Epenisa Cakobau granted land to the Polynesia Company, which hoped to develop cotton farming. Colonel F. E. Pratt later designed the new capital with assistance from W. Stephens and Colonel R. W. Stewart.

Fiji’s capital moved from Levuka to Suva in 1877, and the colonial administration transferred there in 1882. Suva became a municipality in 1910 and Fiji’s first city in 1952. Today, it sits on a hilly peninsula between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour and receives heavy rainfall throughout the year.

The Church here

  1. 1950sLatter-day Saint Tongan and Samoan families, including the Cecil B. Smith and Mele Vea Ashley families, held Church meetings in Suva.
  2. 5 September 1954Elders Boyd L. Harris and Sheldon L. Abbott arrived and organized the Suva Branch.
  3. January 1955President David O. McKay met the missionaries, attended services at the Smith home, and urged them to purchase property for a meetinghouse.
  4. 15 January 1958Fiji was placed in the Tongan Mission, and 93 people attended the conference that day.
  5. 1959Gideon Dolo became the first Fijian to serve a mission.
  6. 1969Conference attendance reached 500, and the district was divided.
  7. 23 July 1971The Fiji Mission was created.
  8. 12 June 1983The Suva Fiji Stake was organized, with Inosi Naga as president.
  9. 18 June 2000The Suva Fiji Temple was dedicated.
