A short history of the area
Lourenço Marques became a town in 1876 and a city in 1887. It became the colonial capital in 1898. After Mozambique became independent in 1975, the city became the national capital and was renamed Maputo in February 1976.

- 1992The Church shipped 1 million pounds of food and relief items to help people affected by a severe drought in Mozambique and neighboring countries.
- 1996The Church was legally recognized in Mozambique, and congregations were organized in Maputo and Beira.
