A short history of the area
Augustinian missionaries and Spanish conquistadores planned and founded Lingayen in 1614. The town took its name from the Pangasinan word lingawen, meaning “to look back,” linked to a large tamarind tree. Lingayen became Pangasinan’s capital and was a major Allied landing site on January 9, 1945, during the liberation of Luzon.
