A short history of the area

Puerto Princesa was founded on March 4, 1872, as Puerto de la Princesa during Spanish exploration of Palawan. Ezequiel Moreno helped select the site after explorers found a broad plateau suitable for settlement. The city also became the center of Spanish naval operations in the area.

In 1911, the American administration made Puerto Princesa the seat of the Palawan Provincial Government. Japanese forces bombed the city beginning January 1, 1942, and occupied it on May 18 of that year. Puerto Princesa became a city on January 1, 1970. In 2012, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was named one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.
