A short history of the area

East London is a South African city associated with the Church's early missionary work in the region. The South African Mission was divided into several conferences, including an East London conference.

The wider history of the Church in South Africa began in the 1850s, when missionaries were called to open the country to preaching. Early branches were organized near Cape Town and in Beaufort before the work expanded to other parts of the country.

1852Jesse Haven, Leonard I. Smith and William H. Walker were called to open a mission in South Africa.
1853The first branch of the Church in South Africa was organized at Mowbray near Cape Town on August 16.
1853A second branch was organized at Newlands on September 7.
1854A third branch was organized at Beaufort on February 23.
