Joseph Smith translated and brought forth the Book of Mormon, organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830, received and published revelations that became the Doctrine and Covenants, and taught doctrines concerning priesthood, temples, eternal families, continuing revelation, and the nature of God. He organized an international missionary effort and helped establish a system of priesthood leadership that continues today.

His achievements in Nauvoo were equally remarkable. Joseph helped found the city of Nauvoo, participated in creating its charter, served as mayor, city council member, and municipal judge, and was elected lieutenant general of the Nauvoo Legion, a legally authorized Illinois militia. He directed the construction of the Nauvoo Temple and helped establish the Nauvoo House. He also played a central role in establishing the Female Relief Society and introducing temple ordinances.

Joseph was also a publisher, religious teacher, civic leader, businessman, community organizer, and political reformer. In 1844, he became a candidate for President of the United States, campaigning on issues including religious liberty, protection of minority rights, prison reform, establishment of a national bank, and abolition of slavery.

His presidential campaign was cut tragically short. On June 27, 1844, Joseph Smith was murdered by a mob at Carthage Jail in Illinois while awaiting trial. He was the first American presidential candidate to be assassinated.

“Praise to the Man” is therefore more than a catchy phrase. It expresses appreciation for a historical figure whose life changed the religious landscape of America and whose followers believe he was called by God to participate in the Restoration of Christ’s gospel.
