Teancum: That Was Dangerous, Let’s Do It Again

Some people see danger and run the other way. Teancum saw danger, assessed the situation, and apparently thought, “That was dangerous—let’s do it again.”

Teancum is one of the most fearless warriors in the Book of Mormon. During the wars between the Nephites and the Lamanites, he repeatedly put his own life on the line to protect his people. He wasn’t reckless simply for the sake of being reckless. He was courageous, determined, and willing to act when others might have hesitated.

In Alma 50, Teancum is described as a mighty warrior and a man who had great courage. He fought to defend the Nephite nation and played a significant role in protecting his people during some of the most difficult years of the war. His story continues in Alma 51 and 52, where he carries out dangerous missions against the Lamanite leadership.

Eventually, Teancum makes one of the boldest decisions in the entire Book of Mormon. After Amalickiah becomes a major threat to the Nephites, Teancum secretly enters the Lamanite camp at night and kills him while he sleeps. Rather than celebrating his success and walking away, Teancum continues serving on the battlefield.

Later, when Ammoron becomes the Lamanite leader, Teancum again takes matters into his own hands. He enters the Lamanite camp with the intention of killing Ammoron. Although Teancum succeeds in killing him, he is also killed in the process.

That is what makes this shirt more than just a joke about a ridiculously heavy barbell.

Teancum represents the willingness to do hard things when hard things need to be done. His story reminds us that courage is not the absence of danger. Courage is moving forward despite the danger when the cause is worth defending.

The phrase “THAT WAS DANGEROUS, LET’S DO IT AGAIN” is obviously a humorous modern twist on Teancum’s personality. Imagine taking one of the most dangerous missions imaginable, surviving it, and then volunteering for another one. That kind of determination makes Teancum a perfect Book of Mormon character for a powerlifting-inspired design.

The massive barbell represents the weight of responsibility Teancum willingly carried. Every plate symbolizes another challenge, another mission, another opportunity to stand up for what mattered.

For Latter-day Saints, Teancum’s example can remind us that discipleship sometimes requires courage, sacrifice, and action. We may not be called to fight ancient battles, but we are frequently called to face difficult circumstances, defend truth, serve others, and keep going when the weight feels heavy.

Teancum didn't wait for someone else to solve every problem. He stepped forward.

So when the bar gets heavy, the workout gets brutal, and you're wondering why you decided to attempt one more rep, remember Teancum.

That was dangerous.

Let's do it again.
