Luke is the only Gospel writer who says it: “there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.” Bloch paints that verse. The angel kneels and holds Jesus, cheek against His head, while He rests His full weight in the angel’s arms.

The garden is almost black. The only light falls on the two figures and the flat rock where they kneel. Behind them, the old trees twist up into the dark.
