Christ in Gethsemane, etching by Carl Bloch, 1880

This small plate, about the size of a postcard, marked Bloch’s return to etching in 1880. BYU’s Museum of Art calls it a work of “remarkable sophistication not achieved by previous Danish printmakers.”

It is the same embrace as the painting, but closer and quieter. Without color, the angel nearly vanishes into the light at the left, and Christ’s bowed head becomes the center of the plate.
