Mary kneels on a mat in a plain stone room, wrapped in white and bowed nearly to the floor. Gabriel is only a rush of blue light in the corner, as if the room had filled with wind. Tissot keeps Mary small and low: everything about her says, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.”
